Desperate Men present our new outdoor animation for 2008/9 – Darwin and the Dodo – a really dead good show!

This small-scale show will look at Charles Darwin’s ideas, life, times and legacy. A comic walkabout for anywhere…

Does God play dice with the universe? Did dodos die out because we did them in? Why did Darwin spend eight years with only barnacles for company? Could all the species on earth fit in the ark? How did kangaroos get from Mount Ararat to Australia? Is the dodo’s last egg going to hatch? And who cares?

All carried off in Desperate Men’s inimitable, dynamic and engaging style, Darwin and the Dodo explores themes of evolution and extinction. Darwin and the Dodo premiered at the launch of Darwin 200 at the Natural History Museum on June 3rd.

Desperate Men bring Darwin to life in ‘Darwin and the Dodo’. Grounded in science and thorough research, ‘Darwin and the Dodo’ looks at Charles Darwin’s ideas, life, times and legacy. Darwin never saw a live Dodo, but this unlikely juxtaposition is the springboard for a tongue-in-cheek and sideways look at the ‘mystery of mysteries’. Using songs, limericks and interactive physical games, the essence of Darwin’s theories are explained and investigated. To see Darwin and the Dodo at Lyme Regis Fossil Festival please click here.

Four besuited performers, heads and shoulders covered in rubbish, by turns litter and then tidy their mess. This perambulating ritual of conspicuous consumption initially horrifies and upsets … adults audibly draw breath whilst children rush to the rescue … but then the penny drops, and the environmental point is made.

A balletic and engaging comment on our throw away society. Perfectly suited to be part of any environmental based event or recycling campaign. Also acts as a timely reminder to ‘bin’ it at any outdoor festival.

They want to bury a large treasure chest. Beach goers are recruited to assist them. But it is then revealed that the valuables they are supposedly carrying are in fact ships rubbish … tins, plastic bottles and waste collected over months at sea …

Themes of re-cycling, beach litter and maritime pollution are all explored and exploited by these fearsome Pirates of the Carry-Bin. Highly topical, interactive and silly.

This land-locked bunch have at their helm that old seadog, Captain Clich. With him are his crew of historical misfits and comical cut-throats, Mr Mince (The Cook), Black Eyed Nell and Billy Boy Fingers. Often joined by Junior Sawbones, (Ship’s Doctor) whose brain is addled with grapeshot …

Spouting authentic sea-faring gibberish and singing lusty sea shanties, they take no prisoners! Head turning, stomach churning, musical, bawdy, entertaining and hilarious. A must for any sea themed event.

The characters … director, camera, sound operator, continuity and a big star, can provide a low-key ‘professional’ presence, high-energy dramatic intervention, or can even document an event with a real camera and interviews. The situations and film content are uniquely improvised around the specific setting, location and needs of the event.

Looking very like the traditional Arbroath Smokey, this filleted double headed kipper travels around attempting to smoke.

No longer able to wheeze away in a cosy Smokery, they must find alternative places in which to partake of a puff. One kipper says ‘Are you still smoking?’ the other replies ‘No I’m cured’ … Mixing the theatrically absurd with topical social issues, the kipper twins offer opposing views on smoking and battle the attractions of the evil weed.
